– Far more than many people think
A meta-analysis in The Lancet shows a clear link between gambling problems and suicidal thoughts and actions. For Game Addiction Norway, this confirms something we have long seen in our encounters with people: Gambling is never just about the gambling.

An invisible risk with serious consequences
When people talk about gambling addiction, the conversation often revolves around finances, relationships, and anxiety. But for many, the consequences don't stop there. Research clearly indicates that the risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts is higher among people who struggle with gambling.
The main findings are clear
- People with gambling problems have an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts.
- The risk worsens when gambling problems occur together with other stresses such as depression, anxiety, debt or relational conflicts.
- The research emphasizes that there is rarely a single cause, but rather the sum of several weighty factors that make the situation serious.
In our conversations and groups, we constantly encounter stories where shame, debt, loss, relationship breakdown, and psychological pain are woven together.
The most important thing to remember:
- Gambling problems are not trivial matters
- The consequences are bigger than economics
- Early help is vital
For many, it is not the gambling itself that is destructive, but the spiral that follows: losses that must be won back, secrecy, shame, sleepless nights, stress and a feeling of not having control.
What you can do if you or someone you know needs help
The first step may be small, but crucial:
- Talk to someone you trust.
- Please contact us at Gambling Addiction Norway.
- If you think someone is in immediate danger, call 113.
- If in doubt, ask anyway. There is no harm in asking if someone is having suicidal thoughts, it can actually save lives.
