Gaming addiction is a serious condition that can have extensive negative consequences on a person's life. The following are common symptoms that may indicate an addiction to video games:
Excessive gaming
Gaming is prioritized first and often at the expense of other important chores or hobbies. Schoolwork, work, or daily tasks are constantly put aside to play more.
Reduced quality of life
You withdraw from social relationships and activities you previously enjoyed in order to play more. The long periods in front of the screen lead to reduced physical activity and increasing health problems. Changes in eating habits and hygiene are also not uncommon consequences of too much computer gaming.
Emotional dependence
Gaming has become an escape from reality, where you seek refuge from stress, anxiety or other negative emotions. While gaming, you may experience major emotional reactions, such as joy and mastery when you succeed and irritation/anger when you don't.
Justifying gaming
Even when your gaming causes problems, you continue to play and justify your actions as necessary or inevitable. The negative impact this has on your relationships creates ever-increasing conflict and stress
Lack of control
Even when you know you should reduce your playing time, you continue to play, sometimes with a sense of guilt. You try to cut down on your playing time without success and this can create frustration.
Physical and health challenges
Irregular sleep patterns can occur as a result of playing late at night, affecting daily function. Many people also experience physical ailments such as neck and back pain, as well as eye problems and headaches.
Secrecy and withdrawal
You become more private and withdraw from family and friends to spend more time gaming. Your actual gaming time is often hidden from those around you.
Gaming is the top priority
Other interests and activities are no longer worth your time. You may also be spending money on gaming-related equipment, in-game purchases, or subscriptions, often without a thought for the potential financial consequences.
Gambling in gaming
Some video games include gambling elements where the player can wager virtual or real money to win rewards or achieve in-game goals. This can include virtual casinos, slot machines or other forms of gambling mechanics that mimic real gambling.
Gambling in video games can increase the risk of addiction, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and adolescents. The random nature of loot boxes and the ability to spend real money on virtual items can lead to excessive purchases and thus loss of control.
